  1. WinJPEG v.1.6 is a shareware image viewer with image processing and
  2. conversion capabilities for Microsoft Windows 3.x.  It has the following
  3. features:
  4.  
  5. - display JPEG, uncompressed TARGA, GIF 87a/89a, or Windows BMP images
  6. - export an image to JPEG, uncompressed TARGA, GIF 87a, Windows BMP, or OS/2
  7.   BMP(8-bit or 24-bit)
  8. - display of JPEG images with 1-pass/2-pass quantization and
  9.   Floyd-Steinberg dithering
  10. - color balance: red, green, and blue adjustment
  11. - hue, saturation, and brightness adjustment
  12. - contrast enhancement
  13. - image rotation, vertical/horizontal flip, and image resizing
  14. - batch file conversion of GIF or TARGA files to JPEG
  15. - slideshow: display selected files sequentially with a cycle option
  16. - copy or paste images to or from the clipboard
  17. - support for Windows 3.1 features like drag-drop and common dialogs
  18.  
  19. There are two versions of WinJPEG: a 386 version for 386's or better and
  20. a 286 one for 286's or better.  The shareware version is a 286 version. 
  21. The 386 version can be obtained by registering WinJPEG.

  23. Future versions of WinJPEG will have the following features:
  24. - load/save TIFF and PCX files
  25. - image cropping
  26. - faster scrolling
  27. - ability to delete file corresponding to currently displayed image

  43. DISTRIBUTION CONDITIONS
  44. You are free to distribute this shareware version of WinJPEG as long as the
  45. following conditions are met:
  46.   1) the distributed archive must contain ONLY the files listed above
  47.   2) the contents of this archive are NOT MODIFIED in any way
  48.   3) this version is not to be sold.  However, a reasonable disk copying fee
  49.      is permitted.

  52. INSTALLATION NOTES
  53. If you associate a file extension with WinJPEG, you can double click on
  54. a file with that extension in File Manager and WinJPEG will
  55. automatically display that file.  There are two ways to associate an
  56. extension with WinJPEG.  The easiest way is to run File Manager, to
  57. click on a file with the desired extension, and to select the Associate
  58. command from the File Menu.  Then type "winjpeg.exe" with the
  59. appropriate path (e.g. c:\winjpeg\winjpeg.exe).  The other way is to
  60. modify the Extensions section of the "win.ini" file in your Windows
  61. directory.  Your "win.ini" may look like this after you modify it:

  70. Note that you don't have to use the suggested extensions (e.g. you can use
  71. .jpe instead of .jpg); WinJPEG will automatically detect the file format.

  73. If you want common dialogs for the open/save dialog boxes, you must copy
  74. "commdlg.dll" to your Windows system directory(e.g. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM). 
  75. If "commdlg.dll" doesn't exist in that directory when WinJPEG is
  76. started, the regular open/save dialog boxes will be used.

  78. "shell.dll," which contains routines for drag-drop, must be copied to
  79. your Windows system directory if it isn't already there.

  81. If there is an old options file (from a version of WinJPEG earlier than
  82. 1.4), "winjpeg.sav," in your WinJPEG directory, you must delete it
  83. before running version 1.6.

  86. HOW TO ACCESS ON-LINE HELP
  87. Help for menu commands can be accessed by 1) using the Index command
  88. under the Help menu, 2) pressing shift-F1 and selecting an active menu
  89. item, or 3) selecting an active menu item without releasing the mouse
  90. button, pressing the F1 key, and then releasing the mouse button. Topics
  91. such as JPEG formats, corrupt GIF files, how to obtain updates, etc. are
  92. also accessible under the Index command.

  95. HOW TO REGISTER
  96. If you use WinJPEG for more than 14 days, you are expected to register
  97. WinJPEG.  When you register, you will receive the latest 286 and 386
  98. versions of WinJPEG, a user manual, and a collection of JPEG images (we
  99. will put as many as we can fit on 2 720k 3 1/2" floppies, on 1 1.44M 3
  100. 1/2" floppy, or on 4 360k 5 1/4" floppies).  Also, the registered
  101. version does not have the reminder-to-register screen at the start.

  103. The registration fee is only $20.  MA residents, add 5% sales tax to the
  104. registration fee.  US residents, add $3 for shipping and non-US
  105. residents, add $8 for shipping.  If you want WinJPEG e-mailed to your
  106. account instead of having it physically mailed to you, there is no extra
  107. shipping charge.

  109. Because of the lengthy time it takes to produce a new version and to
  110. distribute it to registered users, updates are no longer free.  Updates
  111. will cost $5.  Those who registered in October and November 1992 can
  112. obtain the next update for free.  Shipping fees described above apply to
  113. updates as well.  Updates are available when you see a new shareware
  114. version.
